Why not to rely on a program’s spellchecker

Although many software packages contain spellcheckers caution should be exercised when using them:

  • They may not be based on the type of spelling you are aiming for. Australian English, UK English and US English all have different variations of spellings of the same word
  • They do not pick up words that, although of the correct spelling, are not suitable to for the context (their/there/they’re, practice/practise, etc.)
  • They do not distinguish between the author’s text and any quotations in a document. Quoted material should not be changed
  • They do not pick up scientific, technical or specialist terms – specialist dictionaries may be needed for these.
